Are You Solving the Right Problem?

Are You Solving the Right Problem?

When business gets tough, it’s pretty easy to start looking for the thing that’s going to fix everything. Maybe it’s a new strategy, a new piece of software or some clever new way of doing things. And the more impressive it looks, the easier it can be to believe it must work. But impressive and effective aren’t always the same thing. Sometimes, you’re not buying the solution, you’re buying the hype.

There are plenty of people in business who are very good at making an offer look attractive, and there’s nothing wrong with that. A good website, great branding, and a compelling story can all be signs of a good business. And it’s easy to look at someone who appears successful and think, they’re successful, so they can make me successful too. Ultimately, the bells and whistles can draw your attention away from the smaller issues you originally went to those businesses to fix.

So, before you go looking for an answer, it helps to be honest about the problem you’re trying to solve.

Say your business isn’t giving you enough freedom, for example, and your first thought is that you need more revenue. That sounds logical, but more revenue might not change much if every decision still comes through you. You could spend a lot of time and money trying to grow the business, only to end up with a bigger version of the same problem.

One of the simplest ways to avoid buying into the hype is to look for proof, rather than getting caught up in promises, potential or how impressive someone appears to be. Have they solved this particular problem before? Can they show you what changed? Can they explain how they got there? There’s another important distinction here, that something can be genuinely excellent and still be the wrong solution for you. The latest technology might be brilliant, a particular strategy might have worked incredibly well for another business, and an expert might be exceptional at what they do, but none of that answers the most important question, is it right for the problem I’m trying to solve?

That’s where good business decisions become less about chasing what everyone else is talking about and more about understanding what your business actually needs. The goal isn’t to find the most impressive answer, it’s to find the answer that creates the outcome you need.

So the next time something shiny comes along promising to transform your business, pause before you buy in. Ask yourself, what problem am I actually trying to solve? Then ask, what evidence tells me this will solve it? And perhaps most importantly, am I buying the solution, or am I buying the hype?

Because when you know the problem you’re solving, it’s a lot harder to be distracted by how good the presentation looks.
