You Don’t Have to Know Everything

You Don’t Have to Know Everything

At some point, every business owner has to confront the uncomfortable truth that they don’t have all the answers. When the market shifts, the team looks at you. When something goes wrong, you’re expected to know what to do. When there’s uncertainty, everyone waits for you.

But here’s the problem: you don’t know everything, and pretending that you do doesn’t make you a better leader, it makes you a less trustworthy one. Your team doesn’t need you to predict the future. They need to know that when the future is uncertain, you’ll lead them through it, and that starts with being honest.

Here’s what I know. Here’s what I don’t know. And here’s what we’re going to do next. It sounds simple, but there’s a lot of leadership packed into those three statements.

Take a change in the market, for example. You might not know exactly what’s going to happen over the next six months. Nobody does. But you can know what’s happening right now. You can look at the numbers, understand the risks, identify what you need to find out and decide what you’re going to do in the meantime. That’s very different from standing in front of your team saying, “Don’t worry, it’ll all be fine.”

There’s also a danger in believing that admitting you don’t know something makes you look weak. It doesn’t. Making something up because you’re afraid of looking like you don’t know is far more damaging.

Good leaders are comfortable asking questions. They’re comfortable saying, “I don’t know.” They’re comfortable seeking better information before making a decision. That doesn’t mean they’re indecisive. It means they understand the difference between not knowing and not leading. Because “I don’t know” isn’t the problem. “I don’t know, so I’m doing nothing” is.

The strongest leaders can sit comfortably in that space between uncertainty and action. They don’t pretend to have all the answers, but they also don’t leave their team wondering what happens next. They create a path forward.

And this matters even more when you’re running a business with someone else. You’re not always going to know the same things. You won’t always agree. Sometimes one of you will have the answer, and sometimes neither of you will.

That’s okay. The goal isn’t for one person to always be right. It’s to be able to put what you both know on the table, challenge each other, work out what you don’t know and decide what needs to happen next.

So the next time someone asks you a question and you don’t know the answer, resist the urge to make one up. Answer those three statements instead.

Here’s what I know.
Here’s what I don’t know.
And here’s what I’m going to do about it.

You might be surprised by how much confidence that creates, because your team doesn’t need you to know everything, they need to know how you’ll lead when you don’t.
